XXVIII INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION GIANLUCA CAMPOCHIARO FOR PIANO, BOWED STRING INSTRUMENTS (VIOLIN, VIOLA, CELLO, DOUBLE BASS), CHAMBER MUSIC AND OPERA SINGING
From 29/01/20 to 02/02/20

ART. 1 PURPOSE OF THE COMPETITION
The musical association “La città di Bellini per Gianluca Campochiaro“, its headquarter is in Catania, announces and organizes, under the High Patronage and with the support of the Region Sicily (Tourism, Sport and Entertainment Department) and the Municipality of Catania (Culture Department), the University of Catania, the Institute of Musical High Culture “V. Bellini” in Catania, the 28th International Competition and Fourth National Competition “Gianluca Campochiaro” for young musicians (Soloists and Ensembles of up to 35 components), with the aim of endorsing the musical culture among young people, identifying and promoting the artistic achievement of emerging talents as well as of culturally and touristically promoting the host region of the competition.
Participation in the competition is open to musicians of all nationalities.

ART. 2: THE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
The auditions of the International Competition will take place at the premises of the Musical Institute “V. Bellini” in Catania, as well as at the University Campus of Aragona and at the Palace of Culture from 29th of January to 2nd of February, 2020. The gala and award ceremony of the First Absolute Prizes, will be held on 2nd of February 2020 in Catania at Teatro Massimo “V. Bellini”.

SECTIONS
The International Competition will be divided into the following Sections:
1) PIANO
2) BOWED STRING INSTRUMENTS (VIOLIN, VIOLA, CELLO, DOUBLE BASS)
3) PIANO FOUR HANDS
4) OPERA SINGING
5) CHAMBER MUSIC (WITH OR WITHOUT PIANO)

CATEGORIES
SECTION 1 and 2 (Piano and Bowed string instruments Soloists)
Cat. A up to the age of 10 at the competition date
Cat. B up to the age of 13 at the competition date
Cat. C up to the age of 16 at the competition date
Cat. D up to the age of 19 at the competition date
Cat. E up to the age of 24 at the competition date
Cat. F up to the age of 30 at the competition date

SECTION 3 (Piano Four Hands)
Cat. A up to the age of 12 referring to the average age of the duo
Cat. B up to the age of 18 referring to the average age of the duo
Cat. C with no age limit

SECTION 4 (Opera singing)
Cat. A up to the age of 24 at the competition date
Cat. B up to the age of 35 at the competition date

SECTION 5 (Chamber Music)
Cat. A ensembles from duo to sextet up to the age of 16 years old
Cat. B ensembles from duo to sextet up to the age of 24 years old
Cat. C any ensemble from two to ten components without age limit

MUSIC PROGRAMME AND DURATION ALLOWED IN THE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

SECTION 1: Piano solo
The competition will take place in a single round for Cat. A B C and D, in two rounds for Cat. E and F
Cat. A free programme with a maximum duration of 8 minutes
Cat. B free programme with a maximum duration of 12 minutes
Cat C free programme with a maximum duration of 15 minutes, including two or more pieces by different authors and/or times
Cat D free selectable programme with a maximum duration of 20 minutes, including two or more pieces by different authors and/or times
For the Cat. E and F the rounds will be two as follows:
FIRST ROUND: free programme with a maximum duration of 15 minutes
SECOND ROUND: free programme with a maximum duration of 20 minutes
During the second round, the pieces already presented for the first round may not be performed.
Contestants are not required to reach the maximum duration of minutes allowed.
Memory execution is compulsory.
The jury has the right of interrupting the performance if it exceeds the tolerance of one minute beyond the limit set by the regulations for each category.
Among the winners in each category, the jury will choose the representative of the Piano Section, who will compete for the “Gianluca Campochiaro” Award 2020 on the occasion of the final evening scheduled at Teatro Massimo “V. Bellini” in Catania.

SECTION 2: Bowed string instruments (violin, viola, cello, double bass)
The competition will take place in a single round for Cat. A B C and D, in two rounds
for Cat. E and F
Cat. A free programme with a maximum duration of 10 minutes
Cat B: free programme with a maximum duration of 15 minutes
Cat. C: free programme with a maximum duration of 15 minutes
Cat. D: free programme with a maximum duration of 20 minutes
For the Cat. E and F the rounds will be two as follows:
FIRST ROUND: free programme with a maximum duration of 15 minutes
SECOND ROUND: free programme with a maximum duration of 20 minutes
During the second round, the pieces already presented for the first round may not be

SECTION 3: Piano Four-Hands
Cat. A: free programme with a maximum duration of 10 minutes.
Cat. B: free programme with a maximum duration of 15 minutes including at least two pieces of your choice, contrasting in character and/or style.
Cat. C: free programme with a maximum duration of 20 minutes, including at least two pieces of your choice, contrasting in character and/or style.
Among the absolute winners of the three categories, the jury will choose the representative of the Piano Four Hands Section, who will compete for the “Gianluca Campochiaro” Award 2020 on the occasion of the final evening scheduled at Teatro Massimo “V. Bellini” in Catania.

SECTION 4: Opera singing (soloists)
The competition takes place in a single round with the performance of one or more arias, one of which in Italian, at the choice of the jury among those presented by the contestant.
Each candidate must present a programme of at least 4 arias from the opera repertoire (possibly with recitative and cabaletta), contrasting in character and style, to be performed in original tonality and language (at least one of which in Italian) of the total duration:
Cat. A: free programme with a maximum duration of 20 min.
Cat. B: free programme with a maximum duration of 30 min.
Among the winners in each category, the jury will choose the representative of the Opera Singing Section, who will compete for the “Gianluca Campochiaro” Award 2020 on the occasion of the final evening scheduled at Teatro Massimo “V. Bellini” in Catania.

SECTION 6 Chamber Music
Instrumental ensembles from two to ten components with or without piano. The competition takes place in a single round, with the performance of one or more pieces, of your choice.
Cat. A: free programme with a maximum duration of 10 minutes
Cat. B: free programme with a maximum duration of 15 minutes
Cat. C: free programme with a maximum duration of 20 minutes
Among the winners in each category, the jury will choose the representative of the Chamber Music Section, who will compete for the “Gianluca Campochiaro” Award 2020 on the occasion of the final evening scheduled at Teatro Massimo “V. Bellini” in Catania.

ENTRY FEES OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
SEZ 1, 2, 4 (Piano, Bowed String Instruments and Opera Singing)
60 Euro
SEZ. 3 e 5 (Piano Four Hands and Chamber Music)
40 Euro for each contestant

PIANO ACCOMPANIST
Contestants of Section 2, 4, may avail themselves of the collaboration of an accompanying pianist, whose performance will not affect the assessment of contestants.
The organization, upon candidate’s request, can make it available, paying a fee, the service of an accompanying pianist (see list of fees).
It will be the candidate’s responsibility to send a copy (in PDF format) of the selected pieces to the Artistic Direction of the Competition, within the date fixed for the presentation (on-line) of participants’ application in the competition.
Fees for the accompanying pianist, if requested, made available to the Competition Organization, including a test with the pianist, the day before the Competition and accompaniment for the audition:
Sec. 2; Cat. A, B, C and D: 50 Euro
Sec. 2; Cat. E and F: 60 Euro
Sec. 4; Cat. A and B: 60 Euro

PARTICIPANTS’ ASSESSMENT AND PRIZE AWARDING
Participants’ assessment is expressed in hundredths (from 1 to 100/100).
Prizes will be awarded according to the following table:
For a score from 99/100 to 100/100 the First Absolute Prize will be awarded.
For a score from 95/100 to 98/100 the First Prize will be awarded
For a score from 90/100 to 94/100 the Second prize will be awarded
For a score from 85/100 to 89/100 the Third Prize will be awarded
Those who obtain a score from 80 to 84/100 will be appointed Meritorious.
General rule on the prizes awarding
In the event that more than one contestant in the same category are winners of a First Absolute Prize, the scholarship will be awarded to the contestant who has the highest score and in case of absolute equality of score, the cash prize will be divided into equal
parts.

NOTIFICATION OF THE RESULTS FOR EACH CATEGORY
The results of the rounds will be announced at the end of the auditions in each category, followed by conferring the First, Second and Third Prize, with the delivering of the Diplomas of merit and participation.
The Absolute winners of the International Competition will be awarded on the occasion of the gala evening held on 02/02/20 at Teatro Massimo “V. Bellini” in Catania.
Participation by absolute winners in the Concerts is compulsory, under penalty of losing the prize itself and, if any, of relative scholarship. The Absolute Prizes and relative scholarships will not be sent after the date of theAward Gala Concert.

General rule on the award of Special Prizes
If deemed necessary by Artistic Directors, they may change the destination of these Special Prizes. It is also the Organizing Committee’s right of supplementing and/or modifying the nature, type and size of the above-mentioned Special Prizes, in case of special circumstances.

FINALISSIMA
“GIANLUCA CAMPOCHIARO” 2020 PRIZE AWARDING
On Sunday 2nd February 2020 will take place the “FINALISSIMA” in a single round that will decide the winner of “Gianluca Campochiaro” 2020 Prize, established to honor the memory of the young musician who died prematurely, consisting of a scholarship of Euro 1,850.
The 5 representatives of Sections, selected by their respective juries, will compete for the Prize from among those who are winners of a First Absolute Prize in the Category.
The test program will be chosen by the commission from the ones presented at the competition, with a maximum duration of 15 minutes.

Art. 3 GENERAL RULE RELATING TO THE DECISION OF THE JURIES
The juries’ decisions will be final and irrevocable and they will have the right, at their sole discretion, of interrupting or reducing the performance of the pieces presented as well as of not awarding prizes, if the performances do not reach an adequate artistic level.
Furthermore, the committees’ members will refrain from expressing their opinions in the categories in which there is the participation of students with whom they have or had, in the past two years, private or public educational relationships.

Art. 4 ENROLLMENT MODALITIES
Participants of all sections must submit the application form by 20th January 2020, duly completed in all its parts, to the relevant e-mail addresses for each section published on the official website of Competition

The registration form must be accompanied by:

  1. a copy of the identity card or passport;
  2. the program of the music that will be performed (specifying the author, the edition and the duration);
  3. details of the bank transfer made, relative to the registration fee , diversified by section and / or category.

Caution:
For logistical and organizational reasons, no more than 20 participants per category will be accepted, all applications received after this limit will not be accepted, even if received by 01/20/20
NB: Participants who have a family (or other) tie with a member of the jury of the contestant’s interest section are not allowed to participating in the competition.

ART 5 JURIES
Sections selection boards will consist of distinguished Italian and foreign musicians: established soloists, conservatory professors and music institutes, conductors, etc. in concrete with the Artistic Directors: Prof. Carmelita Cocuccio, (International Competition) Prof. Carmen Fontanarosa (National Competition) and the Presidency of the Association, Dr. Caterina Campochiaro.

ART 6 AUDITIONS SCHEDULE
The auditions schedule will be published for registration on the website, no sooner than three days after the deadline.
You can try the piano made available for auditions, according to a timetable that is published on the website in due time and in any case after the deadline for registrations.
Study piano candidates will be provided upon request at the time of registration.

ART. 7 APPLICANTS’ DUTIES
Candidates’ participation in the Competition implies the unconditional acceptance of these rules which the Association reserves the right of modifying in case they considered it as necessary.
For any matter which is mentioned in these regulations, reference is made to the decisional discretion of Artistic Directors.
